Three reasons you might be feeling stuck in the bedroom if you have PCOS.
- Not in the mood?
- Feeling like you’re always making excuses to your partner?
- Wondering what is wrong with you?
You are not alone.
Dealing with the physical and emotional stressors of hormone imbalance and PCOS can absolutely impact your sex drive.
In this blog post I am going to talk about three major reasons why this could be happening. Oftentimes, when we just understand at a deeper level we can have more compassion and grace for ourselves.
In addition, I am going to provide three simple steps to help you supercharge your libido and gain back confidence in the bedroom.
Feeling Stuck: Reason #1
Women with PCOS tend to experience a lower quality of life. Higher rates of anxiety and depression are found in women with PCOS vs. women without PCOS. The emotional shifts play a role in libido. But also the impact of the symptoms that come with PCOS. These include acne, weight gain, losing hair and increased body/ facial hair. Studies show that women feel like they are being robbed of their womanhood. I hear from a lot of females that not having a period makes them feel less like a woman. Menstrual cycles can be a very intimate, empowering time of the month that connects us to our feminine energy.
This all can connect back to confidence, feeling beautiful and ultimately wanting to connect intimately with your partner.
Feeling Stuck: Reason #2
You are not ovulating. There is a natural shift in hormones and testosterone around ovulation. When women ovulate it’s natural to have increased libido.
In order to ovulate, any hormone imbalances need to be addressed.
Women with PCOS may struggle with hormone levels that are out of range. These hormones include estrogen, progesterone and testosterone.
Feeling Stuck: Reason #3
High levels of cortisol will rob your sex drive. High levels of cortisol can be normal for women with PCOS. In some cases, it might even be the root cause of the PCOS.
We live in an incredibly high stress society. Demanding jobs, a more toxic food system, air pollutants…. the list goes on.
Anything that is causing high cortisol out of the bedroom will be carried into the bedroom. Even if you’re not at the office anymore, that hormonal response is still with you.
Three Steps to Supercharge Your Libido
Step 1:
Implement a stress management routine before you start your day and as you end your day. The reason this is so important is because the nervous system gets up regulated throughout the day. There is just so much coming at us (emails, texts, social media notifications…this all counts!)
This doesn’t have to be super long. It could be 5 minutes of deep breathing in the morning and 5 minutes to wrap up your day. Check out this video here to help get started!
Adding daily stress management tools can reduce your cortisol levels and therefore get you more “in the mood!”
Step 2:
Add protein to every single meal. Women with PCOS tend to struggle with major swings in blood sugar. Swings in blood sugar and insulin can directly impact hormone levels, cortisol levels and also energy throughout the day.
By the end of the day, if you have not supported blood sugar levels through protein intake then you’ll feel totally exhausted and moody. And likely the last thing on your mind is sex.
Here are some good protein options:
- -2 hardboiled eggs
- -3 oz boiled chicken breast
- -1 can salmon
- 1/2 cup quinoa
- -3 oz ground meat
- -protein shake
Step 3:
Reduce toxic exposure. I suggest starting in the kitchen. This can take time to make changes once you start digging deep into your day.
Take a look at what you are drinking out of and how you are storing your food. Using plastic storage containers or water bottles can play a role in hormone imbalance. An easy swap is to start drinking out of a glass or stainless steel water bottle. You can also use mason jars, old pickle jars or glass storage containers to keep food and leftovers fresh.
