Ginger For Menstrual Cramps
Do you have painful menstrual cycles? Or struggle from hormonal imbalances like PCOS that contribute to terrible periods?
Maybe you find yourself reaching for the pain meds and hot pack every month….like clockwork.
If not, keep reading. But first, let’s start with why you might even be experiencing these unwanted cramps.
During the menstrual cycle prostaglandins are released. This contributes to painful cramps, diarrhea, nausea or vomiting. Ever notice if your GI health changes drastically during your cycle?
So… this usually means popping some ibuprofen or aspirin .
Ibuprofen is within the NSAID family. NSAID medications help to block the enzymes that produce the prostaglandins. For you, this means living your life and pushing aside the period pain.
Gut Health and Hormone Health
Have you ever read the side effects of NSAIDS?
Stomach ulcers and bleeding, nausea, vomiting, gas and bloating
You might be thinking, well that most likely will not happen (or maybe it already does). But something to note is that in general, gut health plays a major role in insulin regulation and weight control. Women with PCOS tend to have more imbalance in the gut flora than women without. So, keeping the gut as healthy as possible is ideal if you’re already struggling with hormone or weight issues ….on top of the menstrual pain.
Why Ginger Works for Menstrual Pain
First off, ginger doesn’t disrupt the gut microbiome. And more importantly, it contains components that stop the prostaglandins from being created. Therefore, producing an anti-inflammatory benefit. Studies have even shown ginger has similar effects to NSAIDs. So why not make the swap and get an added anti-inflammatory benefit from the ginger?
You may want to consider adding in fresh ginger or ginger supplements to help during your time of the month. Always consult with your health care provider before adding in new supplements or remedies to your routine.
Something else to note: If you’re finding that the cramps every month are unbearable, keep you in bed all day and really disrupt your day to day life, then consider looking deeper in the issue. There may be a larger hormonal imbalance at play.
